Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO for Universities & Colleges
The Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO for Colleges & Universities is a personalised, evidence-based, online prevention intervention developed by psychologists at San Diego State University. In Ireland, the Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO is titled and presented under the trade name the electronic Personal Use Barometer (e-PUB).
Each subscription is customised to your campus to support:
Your Health and Wellness goals
Your Social Norms
Your Campus Resources
Your Local Community Resources
Your Programmes & Departments
Your Strategic AOD goals
The feedback is personalised to each student, and provides feedback about their own:
Individual Drinking Patterns
Specific Health & Personal Consequences
Unique Personal & Family Risk Factors
Campus & Community Support and Emergency Services
The Programme's primary goals are to:
Reduce levels of dangerous and destructive drinking on college campuses with a special focus on two high-risk groups: First-Year Students & Athletes.
Strengthen a culture of safety & health by reducing harms and providing customised links and information about your campus and local community resources.
The Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO Programme provides two ways to positively verify that a student has completed the programme:
Electronic Verification of Completion
The Electronic Verification of Completion (EVC) is an optional "add-on" to the core eCHECKUP TO GO Programme. The EVC provides subscribing institutions a way to positively verify that a student has completed the Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO.
- Students are prompted to begin the EVC on the "Resources" page of their Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO feedback (the last page). Students may begin the EVC only after reviewing all pages of their personalised feedback.
Students provide their personal identifying information (i.e., name, campus identification number, and e-mail address) and select the specific and identified campus official to whom they want to send their verification.- Students must also consent to complete the verification and send the verification via email.
- The student's verification is sent to the selected campus official via email.
- The campus official receiving the verification emails can also access our online, real-time administrative site to review, sort, and query their previously sent verifications.
- Working with their own IT staff, campuses can use their EVC data to create ways to automatically remove administrative holds and/or design follow-up communications with students.
Note: The EVC programme does not transmit students’ responses to the Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO questions nor their confidential alcohol use profile. The EVC only verifies that a student completed the programme.
Personal Reflections & Verification of Completion Programme
The Personal Reflections & Verification of Completion Programme (PRVC) is an optional "add-on" to the core eCHECKUP TO GO Programme. The PRVC provides all the functionality of the Electronic Verification of Completion, but also provides students a guided opportunity to thoughtfully reflect on their personal drinking profile.
Given the research showing that the more time a student spends reflecting on his/her personal feedback, the more likely they are to make positive changes in their behaviour (Dimeff and McNeely, 2000), and guided by Motivational Interviewing and Social Norms theories and research (Walters and Baer, 2006); the questions we have designed are intended to minimise resistance, highlight internal discrepancies, and maximise thoughtful contemplation of personal choices and motivation to change.
- Students are prompted to begin the PRVC on the "Resources" page of their Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO feedback (the last page). Students may begin the PRVC only after reviewing all pages of their personalised feedback.
- Students provide their personal identifying information (i.e., name, campus identification number, and e-mail address) and select the specific and identified campus official to whom they want to send their verification.
- Students must also consent to complete the PRVC and send the PRVC via email.
- Next, the student is presented with questions designed to deepen their thoughtful examination of their personal choices and the social norms surrounding and influencing their use of alcohol. The specific questions the student is required to answer are determined by each individual student's unique Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO profile.
- After the student provides their responses to the selected PRVC questions, the student's PRVC is sent to the selected campus official via email.
- The campus official receiving the PRVC emails can also access our online, real-time administrative site to review, sort, and query their previously sent PRVC responses.
- Working with their own IT staff, campuses can use their PRVC data to create ways to automatically remove administrative holds and/or design follow-up communications with students.
Note: The PRVC programme does not transmit students’ responses to the Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO questions nor their confidential alcohol use profile. The PRVC only verifies that a student completed the programme and allows the campus offical to view students responses to the selected PRVC questions.
The eCHECKUP TO GO programmes include an "administrative section" where officials from subscribing institutions can log-in and obtain usage information, demographics, and basic statistical analyses regarding their respondents' use of the eCHECKUP TO GO in real time. This report is included in the subscription fee and there is no limit to the number of times institutions can access their information.
The report is also customizable so that site administrators can examine the data from certain subsets of the total population. For example, one could view the eCHECKUP TO GO Report information for only females who completed the eCHECKUP TO GO between April 1, 2009 and April 30, 2009. The report will do the rest for you!
As a 'Not for Profit Organisation' working within the SDSU Research Foundation, the eCHECKUP TO GO Programmes provide cost effective & affordable alcohol and other drug interventions.
